The Color of Everything Release
Thank you all for checking out "The Color of Everything." This little 4-page game was definitely a new experience for me. I'd joined Disaster Tourism's Ultralite Game Jam to have a bit of fun and to stretch myself creatively. Boy howdy did this game do just that.
To start, I set a few rules for myself--No Fantasy, No Killing. Those two limitations set me off to find a new genre and to set this game in a world that would foster that kind of thinking. So I turned my gaze to my own life to see if I could find some inspiration. I found it in my day job. I'm an animator by day who works with some amazing illustrators and I thought wouldn't it be cool if that was the magic. From there everything fell into place. The game's enemies were drawn from our real life enemies as artists, just given personas. Discordant reared their head and their army of DeSats (Desaturation).
I was lucky in that I already had a base for the mechanics in mind. At the start of the pandemic my fiancé and I ran a Discord RP server and I played around with some mechanics for it. So I just took what I wrote there and brought it into TCoE. It's simple, fast, and fits well within 4 pages.
Time for some confessions. The attributes, while fit thematically are still something of a mystery even to me on how they'll work. I suspect it'll take some time for even them to sink in. But to start, I like them. Second confession is that I was about to publish the game when I realized I didn't have anything for a system like Hit Points. Thankfully the theme saved me again and in walked the mechanic for "Resolve." I'm super happy with how it's turned out and something I hope to play with further in other games.
Overall I'm super happy with TCoE and it's full package. I hope you enjoy it and please let us know what you think of it.
Here's to your games, and may they bring a Jak-o-grin to your face.
