The Help Action

The Help Action

We finally cracked the code, campers. During every play test players would ask me if they could help another practitioner cast a spell. The only answer I had for them was to use the Linking Aspect. But that always felt pretty hollow. Thankfully with the help of my great gaming group we figured it out. I now give you all the help action.

There are times when a practitioner will want to help achieve the goal for another. This may be assisting in preparing a brew, casting a ward, or enchanting a magical item. When that situation arises, the helping practitioner checks to see if they have an equal amount of Aptitude in the Aspect being used by the caster. If so, the caster reduces the Imposition by another die level. Potentially giving the caster advantage!

The assisting practitioner must have at least one dot of Aptitude of the respective Aspect in order to help. If they have the same level of Aptitude, the casting practitioner gains the help. However, for every point of Aptitude below the caster, the helping practitioner must spend Stress to makeup the difference.

It is tempting for players to want to help each other on every single casting. When everything is calm this isn’t much of a problem. But when the action pops off this may not make a lot of sense for one practitioner to be able to help the others for every single casting. Keep things logical and follow the narrative. If they’re invested in helping one player with casting a spell it is most likely they are too caught up to help with another.

It may also be appropriate for the helping character to shoulder the burden of Constant Imposition for spells that are on-going. This would most often occur for spells that are of significant size or affecting several entities.

We hope this helps your players overcome their Imposition and achieve their goals!

We'll see you by the campfire.
