The Crypt Has Opened 4.0
The Book came not with a bang...
But with the post to Itch.io!
This is it gang. This is the one. After about 4 years of development (pretty off and on during the beginning to be honest) we can finally say the rules side of the game is done! Or rather they're ready for some serious play testing.
What's New?
What you'll find in the 4.0 book is an updated skill system as well as an updated equipment system. You may have seen out post about the new skill system a few months ago, now those rules are integrated into the book itself.
However the equipment section is a complete overhaul. Instead of using Heft and the players keeping track of every little item they have on them, we're now using something closer to how it's handled in Blades in the Dark. Each player has something like a "quantum equipment" selection. These are predefined lists of things they may have on them given the narrative situation.
You now have Town, Excursion, and Traveling equipment. Depending on what you and your group are doing will determine which type of equipment you have on you. If you're staying close to home then you'll have only your Town equipment on you. This selection is specific to each Trope. If your group then decides to head out into the Dead Spaces for a quick jaunt, you'll bring along your Excursion equipment. Headed out for an extended period of time, then pack up with all your Traveling gear.
We found this type of setup works best for the stories you tell with The Crypt Has Opened. Keeping track of each little piece of equipment you have on you just wasn't necessary and rarely came into play. Now you don't have to think about it much and can get back to what really matters. Magic, Cultists, and Cryptids.
Also, there is a bonus, never before seen one-shot at the end of the book! This is the game we'll be debuting at Momo Con 2024, which you get a few weeks early! If you think you'll be there and want to join a game, maybe don't read it ;)
What's Next?
Now I get to focus on the roleplaying side of the book. I'll begin writing the details on the world, writing out the Cryptids, and writing out the Organizations you may come across in your travels. We'll also be expanding the Crypt Keeper side of the game to give more support on how to use the various systems within the game to run a fantastic session of The Crypt Has Opened.
